How it all got started:

The Appledore Summer Festival 2011 is a community driven effort to ensure that Appledore can put on a great grassroots show of the best it has on offer with regard to art and music and just general good fun in all its forms to celebrate the summer season! Festival events will be held at a wide range of venues throughout the village of Appledore between Friday 3rd and Sunday 5th June 2011.

Following the cancellation of this year's Visual Arts Festival, a meeting was held to discuss the possibility of Appledore carrying on with many of the usual events plus anything else the many talented and resourceful people in the village might like to do. A well attended and enthusiastic meeting was in favour of the idea and many events have already been planned. It was decided to call it the Appledore Summer Festival and that it should remain across the same weekend, which this year is June 3-5.

Like that greatest of grassroots festivals in Britain, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, participation in the Appledore Summer Festival 2011 is basically open to all who would like to be involved. It is going to be very much a DIY festival with no formal structure, no fixed agenda and an open invitation to groups and individuals to take part in it and - if they wish - to use the opportunity to raise funds for themselves.

The Lundy Art Group will be holding their customary four-day annual exhibition and others have expressed an interest in having stalls; The Appledore Band will play; literacy charity BookRelief UK will hold a wrting contest for schoolchildren, based on what they can see in a picture or painting; singers will be singing; galleries will be open and workshops held. Gardens will be open and doorknockers decorated - all just for fun this year to make the village look festive, anything goes.

Reverend John Ewington of St Mary's Church will hold the open air service on the quay on the Sunday morning and many other suggestions for fun activities have been put forward

And if you are interested in visiting the Appledore Summer Festival then please keep coming back to this site as we will be posting much more  information about it over the coming weeks!
